What to Expect on a Surf Retreat in Siargao
Daily coaching, video analysis, oceanfront yoga and a group that feels like family. Here's what to expect on a 10-day surf retreat in Siargao.

Maybe you’ve watched surf videos for years and thought, “One day.” Maybe you’ve had a couple of lessons on holiday and want to finally stand up with confidence. Or maybe you just need ten days away from screens, with salt in your hair and good people around you.
Whatever brought you here, a surf retreat in Siargao could be exactly what you’re looking for.
But what actually happens on a surf retreat? How much surfing is there? Do you need to be fit? What if you’ve never touched a board?
In this guide, we’ll walk you through what to expect on the Happiness Surf Retreat in Siargao, based on the details on our retreat page, plus practical tips to help you prepare. Where something depends on your package or the dates you choose, we’ll say so, because we’d rather you have the right answer from our team than a guess from a blog post.
Why Siargao for a Surf Retreat?
Siargao is often called the surf capital of the Philippines. It’s a tropical island in the southern Philippines, facing the Pacific Ocean, covered in coconut palms and known for world-class waves, including the famous Cloud 9.
But surf is only part of the story. The island has a slow, relaxed lifestyle, a surprisingly good food scene and a warm community that makes visitors feel at home quickly. Plenty of people come for a week and end up staying much longer. (We’ve written about that Siargao curse before.)
For a surf retreat, that mix is perfect. You get real waves to learn on, and a gentle island rhythm that helps you rest and recover between sessions.
What Is the Happiness Surf Retreat?
The Happiness Surf Retreat is a 10-day surf retreat based in Siargao. It’s designed for everyone from complete beginners to surfers who want to improve their skills, with a focus on progress, connection and island life.
According to our retreat page, it’s built around four main elements:
- Daily surf training with coaching to help you improve and feel more confident in the water.
- Recovery and balance through oceanfront yoga, stretching and mindful movement.
- Guided surf sessions that meet you where you are, from your first pop-ups to more confident turns.
- Community and island experiences, including shared meals, curated adventures and meaningful moments with the group.
Or, as we like to put it: come for the surf, stay for the feeling.
Who Is It For?
Complete beginners
Yes, really. One of the most common questions we get is, “I’ve never surfed before. Is this for me?” The answer is yes. Our retreat specialises in “zero to hero” progression, and our coaches are trained to work with absolute beginners.
You don’t need to arrive knowing anything about surfing. You just need to be open to learning, falling off (a lot, at first) and laughing about it.
Beginners and improvers
If you’ve had a few lessons and can sometimes stand up, a retreat is a brilliant way to break through that frustrating stage. Daily sessions and feedback help skills stick in a way that occasional holiday lessons rarely do.
Intermediate surfers
Our coaches also work with intermediate surfers who want to refine their technique. If you’re already catching green waves and want to improve your turns, positioning and wave choice, a focused retreat can help you level up.
Who might want to check first?
When you enquire, you’ll be asked to choose your surfing level, from complete beginner to advanced. If you’re an advanced surfer or have specific goals, mention them in your enquiry so our team can tell you whether a retreat or a private option fits best. Our past retreat booking information also asked that guests be 18 or over and have medical insurance, so please confirm the current requirements when you enquire.
The Heart of It: Surf Coaching
Daily surf sessions
Every day of the retreat is built around surfing and progress. Sessions are guided, so you’re never just paddling out alone and hoping for the best. Coaches choose conditions and spots that suit the group’s level, which matters a lot in Siargao, where some famous breaks are powerful reef waves best left to experienced surfers.
Video analysis
This is one of the most useful parts of the retreat. We film your sessions and review them with you, so you can actually see what’s happening when you pop up, paddle or ride.
It sounds simple, but it’s a game-changer. Most of us think we’re doing one thing in the water and are actually doing something quite different. Seeing it on screen makes the coach’s tips click, and it’s one of the fastest ways to build confidence and progress.
Progress at your own pace
Everyone learns differently. Some people stand up on day one, others take a few days. Both are completely normal. The goal is steady, safe progress and a lot of fun, not comparing yourself with anyone else.
Recovery, Yoga and Balance
Surfing is a full-body workout. Paddling uses muscles you didn’t know you had, and after a few days in the water you’ll feel it.

That’s why recovery is part of the program. Our retreat includes:
- Oceanfront yoga to stretch out tired muscles and improve flexibility.
- Stretching and mobility work to help your body recover between sessions.
- Mindful movement and wellness rituals to calm the mind as well as the body.
- A slower island rhythm between waves, so you actually rest.
Yoga and surfing go hand in hand. Both are about balance, breath and paying attention to your body and the ocean. Even if you’ve never done yoga before, you’ll be welcome.
Food, Community and Island Life
Shared meals
Meals are included in the retreat, depending on your package. And we take food seriously. Happiness actually started with food, and our restaurants are known for fresh, colourful dishes. There’s nothing quite like a good meal after a morning in the water.
If you have dietary needs, let us know when you enquire.
Curated adventures
Beyond surfing, the retreat includes curated experiences to help you discover Siargao. Our retreat page mentions island experiences and boat adventures, so expect to see more of the island than just the line-up. Exact activities can vary by retreat, so ask our team what’s planned for your dates.
The group
For many guests, the people are the highlight. You’ll be learning, falling, cheering and eating with the same small group for ten days. Friendships formed on a surf retreat tend to last. Slots are limited per retreat, which helps keep the group close.
Where You’ll Stay
Accommodation is included in the retreat, depending on your package. Our retreat page describes it as luxury accommodation, and our team will share the details for your dates and room type when you enquire.
Happiness has two stays in General Luna, Siargao: Happiness Beach Resort, a few steps from the beach, and Happiness Hostel across the road. Power outages can happen on the island, but all our accommodations have generators, so you’ll still have electricity and hot showers.
What’s Included (and What Isn’t)
Based on our retreat page, the price includes accommodation, meals, guided surf sessions, curated experiences, wellness activities and retreat support, depending on your package.
A few things to plan for separately:
- Flights. Airfare to and from Siargao isn’t included.
- Insurance. Arrange your own travel and medical insurance.
- Personal spending. Extra drinks, shopping, massages or activities outside the program.
Because inclusions depend on your package, always confirm the full list with our team before you book. Retreat bookings also have their own payment and cancellation terms, which are different from a standard room booking, so ask for these upfront.
Retreat Dates and How to Book
Retreats run on scheduled dates across much of the year, and some fill up fast. You’ll find the current list of dates on the Happiness Surf Retreat page, along with an option to request a private retreat on custom dates.
To book, choose your preferred retreat and surfing level on the page and send your enquiry through WhatsApp. Our team will get back to you with details. Please note that retreat dates and details can change, so treat your confirmation from our team as the final word.
When Is the Best Time for a Surf Retreat in Siargao?
It depends on your level.
- Beginners often enjoy months with smaller, friendlier waves. Local surf guides describe the middle of the year as a gentler time for learning.
- Experienced surfers tend to chase the peak swell season, usually from late September to November.
Siargao can have rain in any month, so pack a light rain jacket either way. Our guide to the best time to visit Siargao explains the seasons in more detail.
Getting to Siargao
Most retreat guests fly into Manila or Cebu, then take a domestic flight to Sayak Airport in Siargao. Once your retreat is booked, our team can help guide you on the journey. If you’re planning to explore more of the Philippines before or after, our guide on planning a multi-island trip can help.
Before you travel, check the latest entry requirements for the Philippines with official sources, including passport validity.
How to Prepare
Get your body ready
You don’t need to be an athlete, but a little preparation helps you enjoy every session.
- Swim regularly in the weeks before your trip to build comfort and stamina in the water.
- Work on your shoulders and back. Paddling is tiring at first.
- Practise pop-ups at home. Lie on the floor and jump to your feet in one move. It feels silly, but it helps.
- Stretch. Hips, shoulders and hamstrings will thank you.
Get your mind ready
Surfing is humbling. You will fall off. You will swallow seawater. You will have a session where nothing works. That’s part of it. Come with patience and a sense of humour and you’ll have the best time.

Surf Etiquette and Ocean Safety
- Listen to your coach. They know the spot, the tide and the conditions.
- Respect the line-up. Don’t drop in on someone already riding a wave.
- Stay in your zone. Powerful reef breaks are for experienced surfers.
- Protect the reef. Try not to stand on coral, and use reef-safe sunscreen.
- Rest when you need to. Tired surfers make mistakes. There’s always another session.
